Here’s a heart-warming tale that will get your Wednesday off to a good start. The small Wisconsin town of Stoughton never had an official mascot. But that was before an inflatable beach ball made its escape from the somebody’s yard. The massive sphere was first reported on a local Facebook group having blown to the end of a road. When the ball’s owner didn’t come forward, the people who found the ball signed it and moved it to another street. That quickly became a local tradition, and the ball – dubbed Roly Poly Ole – made the rounds of the entire town.
The Stoughton Facebook group put up a map so people could see where in Wisconsin Ole had wound up next. It’s had all sorts of adventures, from being impounded by the town police as a “neighborhood prowler” to springing a leak and having to be patched and reinflated. It’s unknown how long Ole will be doing the rounds, but hopefully the ball will find a warm place to hang out before winter comes. The town is also talking about replacing the ball each year and making the “Ole Crawl” an annual event. We’re in favor of that idea.
