Well, this is a little disturbing. Rangers at Eisenhower State Park in Texas shared video today of a bizarre phenomenon that they’ve observed on the two-lane road leading into the area. Massive groups of ordinary earthworms - hundreds and hundreds of them - are crawling onto the asphalt and tangling together into ball-shaped forms. Why they’re doing this is anybody’s guess. Worms are often forced out of their underground homes by heavy rainfall like the kind that has struck the area in recent days, but aggregate behavior isn’t something that scientists have typically observed. Whatever the cause, the worm balls are mostly finding themselves being run over by horrified drivers.
