Tennis Balls Snoring

Snoring is one of the most frustrating things to have to deal with in the nighttime hours. Sufferers have no conscious control over it, and it can really be unpleasant to deal with. Sleep medicine specialist Dr. Dianne Augelli went on the Oprah Winfrey Network this weekend to talk about the condition, revealing that 75% of her couples patients come in for snoring issues. She offered up some tips, including one that involves a pair of balls.

The thing about snoring is that it only happens when you’re lying on your back. Snoring is caused by an obstruction in your airway while you sleep, and that obstruction is typically caused by tissues in your throat that are too relaxed to let air through effectively. Losing weight and not drinking alcohol are both effective ways to reduce snoring, but sometimes you need a more quick-acting solution.

Augelli recommends using tennis balls to create a “sleep shirt” that prevents the snorer from sleeping on their back. By sewing a few balls into a pocket on the back of the shirt, you’ll make it so the back position is incredibly uncomfortable, causing the snorer to roll to one side for relief. It’s a low-budget solution to a problem that can ruin marriages, so it’s definitely worth a try if snoring is a problem in your household.
