If you went through elementary school in the United States, you probably have memories of playing dodgeball. Those memories might not be good, depending on which side of the hard rubber balls you often found yourself on. Now the Discovery Channel is tapping into those childhood traumas with a new show, Dodgeball Thunderdome. Instead of a ball-flinging free-for-all, the gimmick here is transforming it into a more complex pseudo-sport. Hosted by popular YouTuber David Dobrik along with Erin Lim and Andrew “Hawk” Hawkins, the show lets contestants battle for $25,000 in cash across a variety of challenges.
Discovery built a customized 13 acre dodgeball course for Thunderdome, creating obstacles and challenges that will tax not only strength and agility but also strategic thinking and mental toughness. Over the course of the first eight episodes, a winner will be picked from each. At the ninth and final battle, those eight finalists come together to determine the one true ruler of the dodgeball universe. It looks like a lot of fun.
“I’m super excited to be working with Discovery on Dodgeball Thunderdome,” Dobrik told The Hollywood Reporter. “Dodgeball was always everyone’s favorite game in gym class and hosting this show brings back many sweaty memories of dominating in Vernon Hills.” Dodgeball Thunderdome premieres tonight at 9PM on the Discovery Channel.
