YouTube videos of people eating testicles — teenage boys, mostly — are a dime a dozen, and they cover all the usual bases.: eating testicles is gross, it’s weird, who would do such a thing, etc. We get it! It’s an unusual food. Really, though is eating testicles any stranger than making chicken wings taste like Mountain Dew, or indeed, the concept of “boneless” “wings” altogether? It’s all a matter of perspective.
The same is true of a man named Sam Wood’s “Rocky Mountain Oysters” prep video. The production value is competent, but the setting, like the subject matter, is fairly unglamorous. Wood wears an airbrushed shirt emblazoned with a deer’s face, and cooks with, among other commonplace ingredients, Mrs. Dash seasoning and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Wood understands that eating testicles is unusual, and does not hide his trepidation for preparing them, but it’s not a joke to him. At the same time, it’s not a braggadocious chest-pounding checklist, either. It’s just dinner.
And it looks pretty darn good.
