Jim Woodring, Legendary Cartoonist, Is Curious About Your Gonad

This is a story that’s only flimsily connected to our mission here of raising awareness of testicular cancer, but when one of the world’s greatest living cartoonists releases a book that has a testicular reference in the title, we have to say something. Jim Woodring has been a leading light of Seattle’s alternative comics scene for decades, starting with his surreal Jim series and moving to a series of self-contained volumes, many starring his odd anthropomorphic character Frank.

His newest book takes him in a different direction from his serial narratives. And Now, Sir — Is THIS Your Missing Gonad? is composed of stand-alone drawings created between 2009 and 2019, assembled and presented as if they were New Yorker-esque gag cartoons, with text courtesy of the mysterious and possibly fraudulent Walter Foxglove. Woodring’s unique art, drawn with a nib pen in a confident but unsettling line, takes on a new dimension in this context.

We’re still not sure exactly what the missing gonad in question is, and if our experience with Woodring’s prior work is anything to go on we may never know. But we had to give a shout-out to the artist for talking about balls. Every little bit helps.
