The causes of testicular cancer are still under investigation, although we’ve already discovered a number of risk factors. That hasn’t stopped people from buying into conspiracies and unproven theories. The latest high-profile person to spread cancer misinformation is Kourtney Kardashian, who promulgated a conspiracy theory about the blue surgical masks that have become ubiquitous in the COVID-19 pandemic.
On her Instagram stories to millions of followers, Kardashian posted an unattributed image reading “Those Blue Masks mandated at grocery stores & airplanes are made of PTFE, a carcinogen made from synthetic fluoride. According to Cancer.Org it increases the risk of liver, testicle, pancreas, kidney & breast tumors + ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, preeclampsia and high cholesterol. High exposure can cause influenza-like symptoms and hemorrhaging in the lungs, leading to suffocation.”
Needless to say, the American Cancer Society’s cancer.org website doesn’t say anything of the sort, and when contacted a representative said there was no basis for the text posted by Kardashian. Other social media users came down on her about the post, but she has yet to make a public statement taking back the dangerous misinformation. Anything keeping people from wearing a mask during this time is a bad idea, full stop, no matter how famous you are.
