Finally, a ball video game that takes out everything but “ball” and “video.” Videoball is the latest release from Action Button Entertainment, the iconoclastic company responsible for iOS cult hit Ziggurat a few years back. This new one is for PC, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One, but we could easily see it running on just about any other platform.
That’s because Videoball eschews photorealistic graphics and all the other cruft of modern gaming to focus on pure skill-based mayhem. The rules are simple: each player controls a triangle and has just one job: get the ball into the opponent’s goal. How that happens, though, is where the magic comes in. You’ve got just one button at your disposal, but it’s potent. Tapping it sends a little triangle out that nudges the ball. Holding it a little longer makes a bigger triangle that gives a lot of oomph. And longer still makes a massive shot that imbues the ball with a ton of velocity.
It sounds simple (and, to be honest, there are a few wrinkles that we didn’t tell you about), but the action is so beautifully tuned that everything you do seems like both a strategic decision and a moment of all-out panic. Action Button has been working on Videoball for years, testing and tuning it so that it plays perfectly, and the effort shows.
With “e-sports” becoming a major part of videogame culture, it’s cool to see something like this that’s stripped down to the basics but still delivers the thrills of competition. If there’s any justice Videoball will be a tremendous success.
Videoball is on sale now for a paltry $9.99. What are you waiting for? Learn more about the game at its official site.Get your balls in the game! Donate to the Sean Kimerling Foundation to win the battle against testicular cancer.
